Bass & Flinders Monsoon Gin

One of the oldest ways to make the base spirit of a gin is with grapes – aqua vitae, the spirit created by monks in Italy that is the precursor to many of Europe’s white spirits, was made from a distilled grape spirit (basically, they made wine from grapes, purified the alcohol by distilling to around 40-50% alcohol and then infused that high alcohol wine with juniper berries).

Significantly more refined, the team at Bass & Flinders create their base spirit from grapes. Different to many base spirits, the Alembic still cannot take the spirit to 94-96% pure – rather it creates a spirit that is around 60-65% leaving 35-40% of the carbohydrates in the liquid. It’s the remnants from the grape wine that give the B&F gins their texture and smoothness.

Monsoon Gin has an eastern twist with lemongrass, ginseng and ginger sitting alongside (a much more traditional) upfront juniper taste. It’s a gin for gin-lovers.
