Broken Hill Distillery Gunpowder Gin

Gunpowder Gin or Navy Strength Gin got it’s name from the English Navy who created a gin that was higher in alcohol to allow more booze in less volume to be stored on their boats as they sailed around the world. It was also found that if the gin was produced above the lighting point – approx 52% ABV, where alcohol would stay alight by itself when set on fire – that the gin wouldn’t affect the gunpowder if they were accidentally mixed.

With this story in mind, the Broken Hill distillery have rested their gunpowder gin in barrels for a short period and produced what we think is one of the best barrel aged gins in Australia. Even if you’ve not enjoyed barrel aged gins in the past, this is a perfect re-try with ginger and orange on the pallet and apple slices as garnish, it’s a complex and approachable gin.

** Please note since filming Broken Hill has rebranded their Gunpowder Gin as Outback Strength Gin. It is the same product.
