Hernö Navy Strength Gin

Navy strength gets its name from the English Navy more than 300 years ago when they would carry gin almost like currency on their boats around the world. They’d have the gin in barrels next to gunpowder and the strength of the gin needed to be above what is called the lighting point in order to not make the gunpowder useless if they are to mix.

Gins that are above about 54% alcohol when mixed with gunpowder mean that the gunpowder will still go bang!

Hernö claim to make the world’s best gin and while we’re not in the business of getting involved in that claim they certain have won countless awards for their gins – Navy Strength no exception. They’re one of the only Swedish gins that is available here in Australia and if you love it, you’ll find it in only a few stores and on the Box Bar website.

It’s a perfect example of a Navy strength gin in that it’s made the same as their London Dry gin and instead of being diluted down to 40%, they only dilute it down to 57% – it certainly goes bang in your mouth!
